First step for students is claiming of tuition, education and textbook amounts. This is a credit, meaning the calculated amount reduces your taxes or can be carried forward to future years. A student who cannot claim the full amount should consider transferring the tax credit to their parents or grandparents.

Expect to find the information on T2202A, log into your student account and forward this to your tax preparer

Interest from student loan is also a tax credit. Expect to find get this information from your loan agency e.g OSAP or your bank.

For students who work expect to have a T4 slip from your employer by Feb 28th.


Canada Emergency Student Benefit (CESB)

 CESB would provide $1,250 per month for eligible students from May to August 2020, and $1,750 for students with dependents and those with permanent disabilities.

This benefit and CERB, CRB, CRSB and CRCB, are not classified as employment income, so are not eligible for the exemption when calculating GIS benefit amounts.
